(Hebrews 13:6) The Lord God is my helper; I will not be afraid.
We often become afraid and anxious when we begin to feel that we are facing the storms of life all alone. We begin to get worn down with the daily pressures of life, often because we try to face our fears in our own strength. We begin to live like everything depends on ourselves. We even begin to live as if God is not present or does not care.
Fear leads us into a deep spiral. Every day we wallow in fear, we spiral deeper and deeper into a dark and loveless space. For anxiety weighs down our hearts. It is important that we do not allow fear and anxiety to get a strong grip on our thoughts.
When we start to become afraid, we must immediately shake ourselves back into focusing on biblical truth. We must resist the spirit of fear, for the fruit of the Holy Spirit is power and love and self-control. We must focus our thoughts on the love God has for us, for as 1 John 4:18 tells us, “love casts our fear.” God is love, and there is no fear in love.
We will experience many troubles in this world, but it is how we walk through world’s troubles that is important. Jesus Christ is our helper, our comforter, and is ever-present with us.
We are never alone.
What are you afraid of in life?
Do you allow the spirit of fear to grow and grow in your life, or do you resist it?
Next time the spirit of fear shows up, I encourage you to read Psalm 23:4-6 out loud to yourself over and over again, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life.”
This truth has set you free!
