(Proverbs 1:7) The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.

This verse can be understood as the motto of the book of Proverbs. “The beginning” refers to the primary or controlling truth (principle) of knowledge.

It is not simply the beginning of a phase of life, or a static technique concerning how to live. It refers to the beginning of a right and covenant relationship with the Creator and Lord of the universe through a worshipping submission (fear).

The word “fear” does not mean being afraid of God, but living in humble submission to him through a lifestyle of worship, and being obedient to his will above all else in life. God does not exist to punish or condemn us. He is love and he works in our lives for our good.

If God is for us, who can be against us?

The word “knowledge” (wisdom) is learning how to live a dependent relationship with God. It is a knowledge rooted in our character and inner life. It does not mean a mystical knowledge, but a knowledge of God and how he created life to work. It doesn't mean reading a bunch of books.

Humble yourself; worship and submit to God, for this is the beginning truth of the knowledge of how to live.

Are you pursing knowledge and wisdom in your life?
