(Proverbs 21:2) The Lord weighs the heart.

This Proverb gets to the “heart” of the matter, for the Lord examines and tests (Proverbs 17:3) the human heart. As many Bible passages emphasize, the Christian faith is all about the condition and function of the human heart. What is the human heart? In the Bible, the heart is a person’s core identity. The human heart is a person’s inner being—our innermost motives (Proverbs 16:2), desires, thoughts (mind), intentions, and moral character.

The Christian life is not about some religious external persona or dress. It is not about simply going to church, giving money to the church, or being water baptized.
Biblical salvation (conversion) is a sovereign act of God through the Holy Spirit that brings about the inner transformation of our hearts. Those who have experienced this heart transformation are often called “born-again” Christians.

We cannot hide anything from God; he sees and knows the true nature of our inner lives. He knows our every thought and motive. God has a spiritual relationship with us in and through the heart. It is in our hearts that we revere Christ as Lord (1 Peter 3:15); it is not simply a mental religious assent. This is why it is important that we “guard our hearts” (Proverbs 4:23).

Jesus said in Matthew 6:2, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” When we speak, our words originate in our hearts (Matthew 12:34). Jesus tells us in Matthew 15:19, “It is out of the heart that comes evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.

Christian living is all about having a wholehearted relationship with God.

We are to love the Lord our God with all your heart. I encourage you to continually pray today, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”
